Germination Guide:

Start your morning glory from seed. Notch or nick the thick coat of the morning glory seed to allow moisture to penetrate the seed and help increase germination.

Soak morning glory seeds in warm water until they swell. Then plant early in the season covering them lightly with soil.

Buy packaged seeds or try collecting your own seeds from dried seedpods on a plant you have growing. There can be as many as half a dozen seeds in one seedpod.

Plant morning glory plants in an area which gets full sun. Morning glories are not good candidates for transplanting. You may get good results, however, by starting your morning glory in a peat pot and planting the entire pot.

Water your morning glory sparingly or only when it is dry. Try not to over water.

Resist using too much fertilizer. Fertilize when your morning glory is first planted and then again every month. If you fertilize too often, you will encourage foliage instead of blooms.

Treat any disease or pest problem quickly with an organic or chemical insecticide. Since morning glories have few problems with insects or disease, you should find it easy to keep your morning glory plant healthy.

Provide your morning glory vine with something upon which to climb. Wire, trellis, posts, trees, fencing and netting are some materials you might use.

Vines can grow very rapidly, so give them plenty of space.

Since vines die every year, allowing your morning glory to climb living trees is acceptable as the vines will not harm the tree. You can also grow the vines on dead trees or logs.

Use them on a trellis or arbor for shade. You can use plastic netting connected to a fence and your porch or house to make a quick and easy arbor.

Protect your morning glory plant from frost to allow for a longer life. Morning glories cannot withstand very cold weather.

Remember that morning glory plants are annuals and will not grow back the next year. However, your morning glory may reseed itself and new vines will grow from seeds.

Ensure the soil in which you grow your morning glory isn't too rich if you want plenty of blooms. Each morning glory blossom blooms only once in the morning and withers during the day. You want a plant with masses of blooms to give lots of continuous color.

Choose among several varieties and colors of morning glory. Colors include red, purple, white, pink and some combinations. The fragrant night blooming moonflower is a member of the morning glory family.
