·  The hedgehog cucumber is grown as an ornamental, but is also edible. They are edible when small and green and have a nice mild taste. Once they are yellow however, they are the most bitter thing you will ever taste. This can be a useful taste though. If you are a nail biter, your dog keeps chewing a certain spot on it's body or a piece of furniture, just rub the yellow cucumber juice on the area! You can juice the cucumbers (add 1 part juice to 3 parts water) and paint or spray the juice on plants that are being eaten by critters. Completely non-toxic and safe and in fact very healthy. This may sound odd, but I use the fruit to brush my cat. He loves it. The spines on the fruit are very soft and flexible. All in all a very bizarre yet useful plant.
