156 Black Icicle is a midseason indeterminate paste tomato originating in Ukraine and also known as Sosulka Chernaya. The slender, regular-leaf vines grow approximately 6.6 feet tall and produce sturdy clusters of four to five elongated fruits. Tomatoes typically measure 3–4.7 inches long and weigh approximately 3.5–4.2 oz each. Their smooth skin ripens to deep mahogany, reddish brown, or dark purple-brown, often retaining attractive green shoulders. Thick walls surround tender, juicy flesh with small seed cavities and relatively few seeds. The rich, aromatic flavor combines sweetness with savory, earthy, and lightly spicy notes. Provide sturdy staking or trellising and maintain even soil moisture to help protect the long fruits from cracking. Excellent for fresh salads, sauces, salsa, roasting, drying, canning, and whole-fruit preserving.
