    Overview:
Bauhinia purpurea L., commonly known as the Purple Orchid Tree, Hong Kong Orchid Tree, or Butterfly Tree, is a stunning deciduous tree or erect shrub native to South Asia. Reaching heights of 7–10 meters, this species is widely celebrated for its showy, pinkish-red blooms and uniquely lobed, butterfly-like foliage. The tree produces flat, strap-shaped pods that mature and twist open to eject its distinctive flat, dark brown seeds. Versatile and ornamental, it is a popular choice for gardens, street planting, and landscape greening projects. Please note: While parts of the tree have traditional medicinal uses, the bark is highly toxic and strictly for external use only.

    Key Features:
    • Distinctive Foliage: Features thickly papery leaves with a shallowly cordate base, split at the apex into rounded or subacute lobes, resembling butterfly wings.
    • Unique Seed Pods: Develops strap-shaped, slightly falcate pods that dehisce at maturity, with woody valves twisting to eject the flat, suborbicular seeds.
    • Hardy and Adaptable: Widely cultivated across warm climates, suitable for use as a specimen tree, street tree, or shade tree.

    Growing Instructions:
    • Seed Preparation: Seeds have a hard testa; scarify by gently nicking the seed coat with a file or soaking in hot water (not boiling) for 12–24 hours to soften.
    • Sowing: Plant seeds in well-draining potting mix, about 1 cm deep. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
    • Transplanting: Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots. Grow on in a sheltered, sunny position before planting out.
    • Ongoing Care: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Mature trees are relatively drought-tolerant. Prune as needed to maintain shape.

    Why Choose Bauhinia purpurea?
    1. Multi-Purpose Landscaping: Perfectly suited for a variety of roles—whether as a focal point in a garden, a lining tree along streets, or a provider of dappled shade in parks.
    2. Fast-Growing & Low Maintenance: Once established, this species is known for its robust growth and requires minimal care, making it ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners.
    3. A Touch of the Exotic: Bring the beauty of tropical Asia to your landscape with a tree renowned for its elegant form and stunning floral display.
