185 Tuxhorn's Red and Yellow is a remarkable American heirloom associated with the Tuxhorn family and the seed-saving community of Maine. Vigorous indeterminate vines produce enormous flattened beefsteaks weighing approximately 1.1–2.2 lb in this seed selection, with even larger fruits possible under favorable conditions. Broad, substantial shoulders may develop pronounced ribbing and a deep stem depression. The golden-yellow skin becomes marbled and streaked with orange-red and crimson, sometimes retaining traces of green around the shoulders. Inside, dense and exceptionally juicy yellow flesh is dramatically veined and flushed with red, with relatively few seeds. Fully ripened fruits deliver a rich, sweet, fruity flavor with an exotic tropical character. This regular-leaf, mid-to-late-season variety requires heavy-duty stakes, cages, or trellising. Excellent for fresh slicing, sandwiches, salads, colorful heirloom platters, and golden-red sauces.
