Mushroom Basket Tomato Seeds - Solanum lycopersicum Heavy Flesh Ornamental Edible Vegetable

Overview

The Mushroom Basket Tomato is a rare Russian heirloom variety, cherished by gardening enthusiasts for its extraordinary appearance and authentic, old-fashioned flavor. Each fruit develops a deeply ruffled shape, reminiscent of a small basket or a thick-cut steak – bright red skin randomly dotted with creamy speckles, like a pastoral painting. This is not just a tomato, but a living piece of horticultural art, carrying the genetic memory of Russian homestead gardens, preserved through generations of seed saving and sharing.

Key Features

• Unique ruffled shape – deeply ribbed, scalloped fruits that stand out in any garden or market display

• Artistic coloration – red base occasionally accented with creamy speckles, making every tomato one of a kind

• Thick flesh, few seeds – dense and firm flesh with minimal seed cavities, perfect for slicing, cooking, and preserving

• Versatile culinary use – excellent for fresh salads, gourmet sandwiches, bruschetta, and homemade tomato sauce

Cultivation Guidelines

• Soil requirements: Prefers fertile, well-draining loam; mix in compost or aged manure before planting.

• Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting time; switch to phosphorus-potassium formula after the first fruits set.

• Support: Requires sturdy stakes, tomato cages, or trellises to prevent the heavy fruit from breaking branches.

• Watering: Maintain even soil moisture; water at the base to avoid wetting the foliage and reducing disease risk. Apply mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

• Harvest: Pick when fruits are fully red, speckles are prominent, and they yield slightly to gentle pressure.
