Largeleaf Gentian Qin Jiao Seeds - Gentiana macrophylla Ornamental & Medicinal Backyard Perennial

Overview

Largeleaf Gentian (Qin Jiao) is a herbaceous perennial plant. It produces blue-purple flowers with rich, pure coloration that stand out in late summer to early autumn, complemented by glossy green leaves for an elegant and unique overall appearance. Beyond its outstanding ornamental value, it also has a long history of traditional herbal use, making it a horticultural gem that combines beauty and practicality.

Key Features

• Extremely cold-hardy – withstands harsh winter conditions, suitable for high-altitude and cold regions

• Container & ground friendly – grows well in balcony planters, garden beds, rock gardens, and border edges

• Stunning blue-purple blooms – rare, sophisticated color with a summer-to-autumn flowering season, excellent ornamental appeal

• Ornamental & medicinal dual-purpose – serves both as a garden decoration and a traditional herbal plant

• Low maintenance – easy to care for once established, with few pest and disease issues

Cultivation Guidelines

• Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade; in hot regions, protect from intense midday direct sunlight.

• Soil: Prefers deep, fertile, well-draining loam. Heavy clay, low-lying waterlogged soils, and saline-alkaline soils are not suitable.

• Moisture: Enjoys cool, moist conditions but is extremely sensitive to standing water. Keep soil evenly moist; avoid prolonged waterlogging at all costs.

• Climate: Prefers cool, humid environments with strong cold tolerance; performs poorly in hot, arid regions.

• Overwintering: Extremely cold-hardy; in temperate zones, no special winter protection is required for outdoor planting.

Why Choose This Variety?

Because it is not just a plant, but one with character, history, and purpose.
